Question 2 — the target
What does Marcus want most in this chapter? Quote one sentence from the text that shows it, and explain in one sentence how your quote shows it.
Look for: the explanation, not the quote. A correct quote with “this shows he wants it” is a partial — the student has selected evidence but has not yet reasoned from it.
Question 3 — stretch
A classmate says Marcus wants to be left alone. Find one line that could support that reading, then say why you agree or disagree.
Look for: students who can hold a reading they disagree with long enough to argue against it. This is the one to read first when planning tomorrow.
Sort into three piles as you collect: has the reasoning, has the quote only, has neither. The middle pile is tomorrow's We Do.
